How to Calculate a Tip

Tip = Bill before tax × Tip % ÷ 100
Per person = (Bill + Tip) ÷ Number of people

Mental math: move the decimal one place left for 10% ($85 → $8.50), double it for 20% ($17), or add half again for 15% ($12.75).

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I tip on the total before or after tax?

Customarily on the pre-tax amount, though many people tip on the total for simplicity. The difference is small.

How much is a 20% tip on $100?

$20, for a total of $120.

Do I need to tip if there is a service charge?

Not usually. An automatic gratuity already covers the tip; you can add more for exceptional service.

How do I split a bill with a tip?

Add the tip to the bill and divide by the number of people. Use the round-up option above so everyone pays whole dollars.
