What does karat (K) mean in gold?
Karat measures gold purity out of 24 parts. 24K = 99.9% pure gold. 22K = 91.67% gold. 18K = 75% gold. 14K = 58.33% gold. 10K = 41.67% gold. In India, 22K and 18K are most common for jewellery.
How is gold price per gram calculated?
Gold Price per gram = (International spot price per troy oz ÷ 31.1035). The spot price is quoted in USD per troy ounce globally. For Indian prices, multiply by USD/INR exchange rate and add import duty (~10.75%) and GST (3%).
What is a troy ounce?
1 troy ounce = 31.1035 grams. It is different from a regular (avoirdupois) ounce (28.35 g). All precious metals (gold, silver, platinum) are globally quoted in troy ounces. Never confuse the two when calculating values.
What is making charges in gold jewellery?
Making charges are the labour and manufacturing cost of jewellery, typically 8–25% of gold value (or ₹300–600 per gram). They are separate from the gold price. Always ask for itemised billing: gold weight × purity value + making charges + GST.
Is hallmarked gold better?
Yes. BIS hallmarked gold in India certifies purity tested by a BIS-licensed assaying centre. Since June 2021, hallmarking with unique HUID is mandatory for all gold jewellery sold in India. The hallmark includes BIS logo, purity (e.g. 916 for 22K), and a 6-character HUID.
