Copper Calculator Guide: Scrap Value, Grades & Pricing

Copper is one of the world's most traded commodities. Whether you're dealing in scrap copper, buying wire, or tracking commodity markets, here's how copper pricing works.

Copper Scrap Grades

Grade 1 — Bare Bright Wire~99%+ copper

Uncoated, unalloyed copper wire. Highest scrap value (100% benchmark).

Grade 2 — Clean Copper~94–96% copper

Copper pipe, bus bars, clean sheet with no plating. ~90–95% of Grade 1 price.

Grade 3 — Light Copper~88–92% copper

Oxidised or painted copper, gutters, pots. Lower value.

Insulated Wire~30–70% copper

Value depends heavily on wire gauge — needs stripping or estimation.

Scrap Value Formula

Scrap Value = Weight × Purity % × Market price per kg
10 kg of Grade 2 (95%) at ₹700/kg:
= 10 × 0.95 × 700 = ₹6,650

Frequently Asked Questions

How is copper scrap value calculated?

Scrap value = Weight (kg) × Purity % × Copper price per kg. Market price is set by the LME (London Metal Exchange) in USD per metric tonne. For example, 5 kg of 95% grade copper at ₹700/kg: 5 × 0.95 × 700 = ₹3,325.

What are the different grades of copper scrap?

Grade 1 (Bare Bright): 99%+ pure uncoated copper wire — highest value. Grade 2: clean copper pipe, fittings, no solder — ~95% value. Insulated wire: lower due to plastic coating. Brass: copper-zinc mix, ~60–70% copper content.

What is the current copper price?

Copper prices fluctuate daily on the LME (London Metal Exchange). As of mid-2024, prices ranged from $8,000–$11,000 per metric tonne (USD). India prices are higher due to import duty and GST. Always check current exchange prices before buying or selling.

Why is copper so valuable?

Copper has exceptional electrical and thermal conductivity — second only to silver. It is essential for electrical wiring, EV motors, solar panels, plumbing, and electronics. Growing demand from renewable energy and electric vehicles has pushed prices higher.

Is copper theft a problem?

Yes — copper theft costs billions globally annually. Thieves steal copper wire from electricity substations, solar farms, railway lines, and buildings. Many countries now require scrap dealers to record seller details to deter theft. Always buy from registered dealers with proper documentation.
